IPO: Helping SMEs get value from their Intellectual Property

In response to Professor Hargreaves 2011 report on Intellectual Property and Growth, the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has launched From Ideas to Growth: Helping SMEs get value from their Intellectual Property.

Supporting SMEs to provide knowledge of their IP and the impact it may have on their business, the IPO will be providing training and awareness seminars, online tools to help businesses assess their IP assets as well as improving the availability commercially available IP advice.

IBM Patent purchased by Facebook

Facebook, the social network site, has confirmed it has purchased some of IBM's intellectual property rights (IPR) including software, networking and other technologies.

There is speculation the move to purchase the IPRs is a result of the lawsuit Yahoo launched against Facebook a few weeks ago, however all parties declined to discuss the matter.

UK-German Patent Prosecution Highway opens

Applicants who have already obtained a patent from either the UK Intellectual Property Office or the German Patent and Trademark Office can request via The Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) an accelerated examination of a corresponding application filed in the the other country.

Make it in Great Britain Competition

The nationwide competition is designed to identify innovative British pre-market products, processes and concepts, with the winning entries forming part of the summer exhibition at the Science Museum.

The competition is open to inventors, manufacturers, engineers and designers, all size of businesses, as well as the general public. There are five categories to compete in, with one specifically for 16-21 year olds.

The UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCa) has closed down an online music site citing “music posted on the site was stolen from the artists and may have damaged careers”.

There is a belief by some industry observers that the take down of the site is an indication the British authorities are increasing efforts to combat online piracy with SOCa confirming the action was part of a wider operation to try and combat illegal uploading of copyrighted material online.

Extension of copyright protection for music performers

EU laws have formally approved an extension of current copyright protection for music performers, currently the term of copyright is for 50 years but under the new law this will be extended to 70 years.

As many music performers start their careers in their early 20’s the extension of the copyright protection should assist them in later life when it can be assumed, most people require financial assistance.
